Sayla Mass

Overview

Sayla Mass, originally named Artesia Som Deikun, is a key character in the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise. She is the daughter of the political figure Zeon Zum Deikun and the younger sister of Char Aznable. During the One Year War, she boards the Earth Federation warship White Base, fulfilling duties as a communications operator and combat pilot while navigating her complex family heritage.

Appearance

Sayla has short blonde hair and blue eyes. Throughout her depictions, she is dressed in an Earth Federation military uniform, a long-sleeved jacket, pantyhose, a pilot suit, and a swimsuit.

Personality

Sayla possesses a strong-willed, dignified demeanor and does not hesitate to reprimand selfish behavior with stern discipline. Unlike her brother, her upbringing in a nurturing environment left her without a vengeful hatred toward the Zabi family. She shows empathy and deep concern for her comrades, though her iron determination occasionally leads her to take bold, independent actions when driven by personal conviction.

Abilities

Initially trained in medicine, Sayla serves efficiently as a shipboard communications operator before training to fly military craft. She pilots the Core Fighter, G-Fighter, and Core Booster in combat, achieving confirmed enemy shotdowns. She also briefly piloted the RX-78-2 Gundam, and in alternate settings, operated an Armored Type GM and a Light Type Guncannon. She demonstrates latent Newtype sensitivity.

Background

Born into the Deikun family, she was taken in by the Mass family to escape persecution following her father's death, changing her name to Sayla Mass. After relocating to Side 7, she became caught up in the One Year War and joined the crew of the White Base. Following painful encounters and an eventual parting with her brother Char, she survived the war, subsequently retiring from military service to live independently as an investor.

Relationships

She is the daughter of Zeon Zum Deikun and Astraia Tor Deikun, and the younger sister of Char Aznable (Casval Rem Deikun). On the White Base, she serves under Bright Noa alongside crewmates Mirai Yashima, Kai Shiden, Hayato Kobayashi, and Amuro Ray. In later years, she rescues and takes care of Leina Ashta, the younger sister of Judau Ashta.

Trivia

Sayla appears across multiple alternate continuities and derivative works, such as Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, where her history and assigned mobile suits differ from the main timeline.
