Duo Maxwell

Overview

Duo Maxwell is one of the main protagonists and Gundam pilots in Mobile Suit Gundam Wing and its associated works. Hailing from the Sweeper Group within the L2 colony cluster, he operates the Gundam Deathscythe under the direction of Professor G. While he adopts the nickname "God of Death" on the battlefield due to his formidable combat effectiveness, he is the most sociable and optimistic member among the five pilots, serving as a bright mood maker who supports his allies through grueling conflicts.

Appearance

Duo is a handsome young boy with chestnut brown hair styled into a long single braid reaching down to his waist and thighs, paired with purple eyes. His primary outfit consists of black attire reminiscent of a minister or priest, complemented by a hat, gloves, and black trousers. In Mobile Suit Gundam Wing Endless Waltz, his ensemble changes to a casual jacket attire. He is also seen wearing a pilot suit and sunglasses on various missions.

Personality

Duo has a cheerful, friendly, and outgoing demeanor, expressing his feelings openly. Among the eccentric team of Gundam pilots, he is notably the most grounded and sensible individual. Despite calling himself the "God of Death," he values human life deeply and grieves over the tragedies brought by war. He abides by a firm personal belief to never tell lies, even when forced to flee or hide. Although his optimism frequently uplifts his comrades, he routinely finds himself drawing the short straw and suffering physical mishaps.

Abilities

Duo is an exceptionally skilled mobile suit pilot, effortlessly maneuvering machines such as the Gundam Deathscythe and its upgraded variants in intense battles. Developed through his background and training, he possesses high physical agility, excelling at stealth operations where he masks his presence completely to infiltrate facilities. He is adept at hacking complex security systems, highly proficient with handguns, automatic rifles, and explosive weaponry like grenades, and demonstrates impressive competence in mechanical maintenance and modification.

Background

Born a war orphan in the L2 colony cluster, Duo survived his early childhood on the streets before being taken in by the Maxwell Church at age seven. After losing his caregivers in a violent military raid on the church, he returned to wandering until his infiltration and computer talents caught the attention of Professor G. Trained as a pilot and agent, he descended to Earth during Operation Meteor to fight alongside the other Gundam pilots. Following the conflicts, he engaged in running a salvage business and later established a church on Mars.

Relationships

Duo shares a deep bond of trust with Heero Yuy; despite initial clashes and Heero borrowing parts from Duo's Gundam without permission, they grow into reliable partners who respect each other's resolve. He forms a close connection with Hilde Schbeiker, a former OZ volunteer who assists him, eventually becoming long-term partners running a salvage yard together after the war. He also maintains strong ties of camaraderie with fellow pilots Trowa Barton, Quatre Raberba Winner, and Chang Wufei.

Trivia

His given name "Duo" stems from a promise to his deceased childhood friend Solo, while his surname "Maxwell" honors the church that raised him. His signature braided hairstyle was originally styled by a sister at the church, which he continues to keep in memory of his past. Audio drama releases establish his favorite food as fried shrimp. Duo enjoys high popularity among fans, having taken first place in multiple official and magazine character popularity polls.
