Gelgoog

The MS-14 Gelgoog is a mass-production general-purpose mobile suit from the Principality of Zeon, debuting in Mobile Suit Gundam. Designed as the primary successor to the Zaku II, it stands as Zeon's first main mass-production machine natively built to handle beam weaponry. With overall baseline performance specifications exceeding those of the RX-78-2 Gundam, it represented the pinnacle of Zeon's One Year War mobile suit engineering. However, serious development and manufacturing delays meant it was only deployed in numbers during the final Battle of A Baoa Qu, where a severe shortage of veteran pilots prevented the suit from achieving its full potential.

Overview

Appearance

The suit features a head housing a single mono-eye (pink or red) and an assault visor. A defining visual trait is the absence of a standard external backpack, as the main thrusters are instead integrated internally within the wide flare of the leg armors and the rear skirt armor. It is equipped with a large kite-shaped shield that can be hand-held or mounted onto its back via a structural latch, treated with an anti-beam coating.

Abilities

Equipped with a high-output generator and advanced cooling systems derived from amphibious units, the Gelgoog easily powers handheld beam weapons. Its long-barreled beam rifle features a dedicated stock and independent targeting scope, conferring superior accuracy and firepower. For close combat, it utilizes a twin-bladed beam naginata capable of generating S-curved energy blades from both ends of its hilt. The unit can also fire kinetic weaponry including the 360mm Giant Baz, MMP-80 machine guns, and simplified missile launchers. Its back incorporates a versatile module system that accepts mission-specific option packs such as high-mobility booster packs or beam cannon units.

Background

Development began during the One Year War to counter the Earth Federation's V Project by creating a beam-weapon-capable main unit. Friction among defense contractors and delays in miniaturizing beam armaments stalled progress, forcing Zeon to temporarily fill the void with the Rick Dom. Derived from refined prototypes of the High Mobility Type Zaku II, the Gelgoog eventually won the competition against the Gyan for mass production. By the time production hit its stride, the war was nearly over. At A Baoa Qu, the lack of surviving veteran pilots meant most units were assigned to poorly trained student conscripts. Thanks to its outstanding baseline potential and modular design, modified Gelgoog units continued to serve for years after the war within forces such as Zeon remnants, the AEUG, Neo Zeon, and the Sleeves.

Relationships

The early production type (YMS-14 / MS-14S) was assigned to Char Aznable, who fought against Amuro Ray's Gundam at the Texas Colony and while escorting Lalah Sune's Elmeth. Most initial production units were assigned to the elite Chimera Corps under Kycilia Zabi. Other customized variants and specialized units were piloted by notably skilled commanders and aces, including Anavel Gato, Herbert von Karspen, Erik Blanke, Visch Donahue, and Masai Ngaba.

Trivia

The unit was engineered so that existing Zaku II assembly lines could be repurposed for its manufacture, utilizing standardized component specs. Its versatile option-pack mounting structure later inspired the Earth Federation's 'Trans-Pack System,' which unified back connection standards across Federation and captured Zeon mobile suits to easily swap mission equipment. Additionally, because wielding the dual-emitted beam naginata proved difficult in chaotic melee battles, many pilots preferred activating only a single beam blade to use it like a conventional beam saber.
