Super Gundam
Super Gundam, officially designated as Mk-II Defenser (RX-178+FXA-05D), is a long-range artillery support mobile suit featured in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. Belonging to the Anti-Earth Union Group (A.E.U.G.), it represents the combined form of the RX-178 Gundam Mk-II and the FXA-05D G-Defenser support fighter. Designed to compensate for the base unit's waning technical advantages during the Gryps Conflict, it delivers high firepower and long-range strike capabilities.
Overview
Super Gundam, officially designated as Mk-II Defenser (RX-178+FXA-05D), is a long-range artillery support mobile suit featured in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. Belonging to the Anti-Earth Union Group (A.E.U.G.), it represents the combined form of the RX-178 Gundam Mk-II and the FXA-05D G-Defenser support fighter. Designed to compensate for the base unit's waning technical advantages during the Gryps Conflict, it delivers high firepower and long-range strike capabilities.
Appearance
The machine consists of the RX-178 Gundam Mk-II equipped with a classic V-fin antenna, joined at the back to the FXA-05D G-Defenser, which forms large side binders. Upon docking, its handheld shield is jettisoned, leaving the attached binder components to act as fixed shields. It carries a long-barrelled long rifle, houses 14-tube missile pods within its side binders, and mounts twin 60mm vulcan guns on the missile pod flanks. The unit can also reconfigure into the G-Flyer cruising form.
Personality
As an unpiloted mobile suit weapon system, Super Gundam does not possess an individual personality or consciousness.
Abilities
Its primary armament is a 6.8MW long-barrelled beam rifle capable of destructive long-range sniping, which can be connected via cable to the main body to further increase its output. It is equipped with 14-tube missile pods, twin 60mm vulcan guns, and dual beam sabers for multi-range engagements. The extra thrusters provide strong forward acceleration and enable conversion into the G-Flyer cruising form, though the added mass reduces close-quarters agility. Following combat against the RX-139 Hambrabi, its electrical shock resistance was reinforced.
Background
During the Gryps Conflict, the Anti-Earth Union Group developed the G-Defenser based on the One Year War's G-Fighter concept to upgrade the Gundam Mk-II against advanced Titans mobile suits. In battle, Katz Kobayashi frequently piloted the G-Defenser into combat zones to execute mid-air docking with the Gundam Mk-II piloted by Emma Sheen. Although it provided critical firepower in late-conflict engagements, high production costs, maintenance needs, and piloting demands prevented the G-Defenser from being reissued during the First Neo Zeon War.
Relationships
Emma Sheen served as the primary combat pilot of the combination, using its heavy artillery to support the AEUG. Katz Kobayashi operated the G-Defenser support craft, responsible for delivering the unit to perform docking maneuvers during battle. It fought alongside Kamille Bidan in the MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam as part of the Argama's primary strike force, engaging Titans pilots such as Dunkel Cooper and Ramsus Hasa operating RX-139 Hambrabi mobile suits.
Trivia
While officially designated as the Mk-II Defenser in mechanical reference charts, the name Super Gundam originated as an in-universe nickname used by maintenance personnel before becoming its widely accepted title in model kit documentation. The G-Defenser docking system utilizes standard connection hardpoints, making it structurally compatible with other mobile suits sharing the same backpack layout, such as the MSA-003 Nemo and RGM-86R GM III. The unit is also represented in fan anthropomorphism as an MS Girl known as Super-ko.
