Overview
Dozle Zabi is a prominent character in the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise. Serving as the Commander-in-Chief of the Zeon Space Attack Force with the rank of Vice Admiral, he is the third son of Sovereign Degwin Sodo Zabi. Stationed at the space fortress Solomon, Dozle distinguishes himself from his politically ambitious siblings, Gihren Zabi and Kycilia Zabi, by functioning strictly as a dedicated military leader. Respected by his subordinates for his charismatic frontline leadership, he plays a central role in directing Zeon's orbital operations throughout the One Year War.
Appearance
Dozle Zabi possesses an exceptionally tall, heavily muscular build and a distinctive scar across his face. He wears his medium-length hair in a mullet style accompanied by prominent sideburns. On the battlefield and during operational combat, he eschews ornate command uniforms in favor of a standard-issue military normal suit.
Personality
Dozle Zabi is a straightforward, honorable military officer who disdains political intrigue. Known for his candid and generous demeanor, he treats his troops with respect, earning deep loyalty from frontline soldiers. He is a fiercely protective family man who treasures his wife and daughter, and he dotes on his youngest brother. Although he can be skeptical of unproven innovations and sometimes lacks long-term strategic foresight, Dozle demonstrates practical adaptability once new concepts prove effective, frequently prioritizing his soldiers' immediate operational needs over military bureaucracy.
Abilities
As Commander-in-Chief of the Space Attack Force, Dozle excels at fleet command and championing mobile weapon logistics, including the swift rollout of Rick Dom units. He is a capable pilot who operates customized Mobile Suits tailored to his broad build, such as his personalized Zaku II and Rick Dom equipped with large Heat Hawks and shoulder spikes. When commanding the massive mobile armor MA-08 Big Zam, he uses its I-field barrier to neutralize enemy capital beam fire while devastating enemy fleets with widespread mega particle cannons. Even when his machine is crippled, he demonstrates relentless combat tenacity, continuing to engage enemy units on foot using an assault rifle.
Background
Born in U.C. 0051 as the third son of Degwin Sodo Zabi, Dozle rose to become Vice Admiral and Commander-in-Chief of the Zeon Space Attack Force. During the early stages of the One Year War, he executed major strategic operations from the front lines, though he privately suffered immense guilt over the catastrophic loss of life. Following the death of his younger brother Garma, he dispatched specialized forces to hunt down the Earth Federation's prototype mobile suit team. During the Battle of Solomon near the war's conclusion, facing devastating losses from the Federation's Solar System weapon, Dozle prioritized the evacuation of his wife, daughter, and remaining troops. He personally piloted the Big Zam as a rear guard to stall the enemy, dying in battle when his machine exploded.
Relationships
Dozle Zabi maintains complex ties within the Zabi family; while he clashes politically with his older brother Gihren Zabi and sister Kycilia Zabi over resources and strategy, he fiercely dotes on his younger brother Garma Zabi. He is a devoted husband to Zena Zabi and a protective father to his daughter, Mineva Lao Zabi. Demonstrating pragmatism over politics, he earns the genuine loyalty of skilled officers like Ramba Ral and ace pilot Shin Matsunaga by evaluating them solely on merit. However, his strong personal affection for his family drives actions like demoting Char Aznable following Garma's tragic demise.
Trivia
Dozle is well known for his firm belief that numerical superiority is decisive in warfare, a concept he strongly voiced when requesting reinforcements from his family. While his flagship is depicted as the Gwazin-class Gwaran in animated works, it is named Gontowa in the original novelization. In secondary lore, the scar across his face is said to have been incurred during a past assassination attempt while attempting to shield his sibling. Additionally, due to being born to Degwin's concubine, Dozle's familial hierarchy leads to peculiar addressing conventions regarding his sister Kycilia.
