Overview
Martin Upmont is a character in Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury. He is a third-year Management Strategy student at the Asticassia School of Technology (student ID: KS117) and serves as the Head of Earth House. Later taking on a role at GUND-ARM Inc., he acts as the practical caretaker and straight man for his eccentric peers, constantly balancing his worries with his duties as a grounded leader for the Earthian students.
Appearance
Martin is a tall, slender young man with dark skin and dark blue hair. He is primarily seen wearing the standard Asticassia School of Technology uniform, consisting of a long-sleeved jacket and trousers. Outside of classes, his attire includes casual shirts and a beanie.
Personality
Though indecisive and soft-spoken, Martin is fundamentally serious, earnest, and deeply responsible. His humble demeanor prevents clashes among the expressive members of Earth House, effectively fostering a supportive atmosphere. While he suffers from self-doubt and can panic under extreme pressure, he possesses sharp powers of observation and puts the safety of his friends above all else when crises arise.
Abilities
Martin lacks high-level combat skills as a pilot, operating a standard Zowort equipped with a flight unit and handgun during team duels. However, he exhibits sharp analytical insight when observing mobile suit battles, correctly predicting tactical advantages and movements. He also possesses practical knowledge regarding space vessels and their operations.
Background
As Head of Earth House, Martin welcomed Suletta Mercury and was later pressed into service at GUND-ARM Inc. by Miorine Rembran. During the duel against Grassley House, he sortied in a Zowort to help support Chuatury Panlunch's decisive sniping action. During the attack on Plant Quetta, he witnessed suspicious behavior by Nika Nanaura. Driven by a heavy sense of responsibility to protect Earth House from being implicated in terrorism, he made the difficult choice to report the matter to authorities. After resolving his conflict with his peers, he stood by his crew through the school crisis and participated in the mission to Quiet Zero.
Relationships
Martin shares a close bond with fellow Earth House members, including Nika Nanaura, Chuatury Panlunch, Ojelo Gabel, Nuno Kargon, Till Nys, Lilique Kadoka Lipati, and Aliya Mahvash. He supports Suletta Mercury and Miorine Rembran in their endeavors. During a period of intense guilt over reporting Nika to protect the dorm, he found himself confiding in and being pushed around by Secelia Dote.
Trivia
Martin's prone-to-panic nature and high-pitched reactions frequently provided moments of comic relief during tense narrative developments. Details such as his familiarity with high-end food during school receptions have led fans to note his relatively comfortable upbringing compared to other Earthian students.
