Overview

The Gundam Astray Red Frame, designated MBF-P02, is a mobile suit appearing in the Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Astray series. Built secretly by Orb's Morgenroete corporation as the second prototype of the Proto Astray series, it was abandoned during the destruction of the Heliopolis colony. It was subsequently salvaged by Lowe Guele of the Junk Guild, who made it his personal machine. Designed to test operating systems for Naturals, it is widely recognized for its customized modifications and distinct samurai-inspired equipment.

Appearance

The unit features a streamlined, exposed inner skeleton painted in a vivid red color code, indicating its original role in testing Natural-use operating systems. Following early battles, its right arm was replaced with a repainted arm taken from the Astray Gold Frame. Its signature weapon, the Japanese katana-style Gerbera Straight, is mounted on its left hip. When outfitted with the salvage unit, the upper torso is covered by a modified Goohn casing featuring a transparent canopy over the head.

Personality

As a piloted mobile suit, it possesses no consciousness of its own. However, its maintenance and configuration reflect the creative, unconventional personality of its pilot, Lowe Guele. Rather than serving purely as a weapon of war, the unit is continually modified for practical civil work, unconventional engineering experiments, and martial arts combat setups suited to Lowe's technical curiosity.

Abilities

The Red Frame relies on a customized Natural OS aided by the pseudo-personality AI '8', programmed with real martial arts and swordplay motion data from the master Un Noa. Its primary armament includes physical katanas like the Gerbera Straight and Tiger Pierce, enabling precise fluid swordsmanship capable of slicing through beam attacks. It can also discharge energy spheres from its palms with the Koraiqiu technique and perform the devastating Red Flame punch using Powered Red arms. It accommodates specialized options such as the Caletvwlch multi-tool, the 150-meter-long 150 Gerbera, and the massive Power Loader suit.

Background

Constructed in secret at the Heliopolis colony using stolen data from the Earth Alliance's G Project, the Red Frame was deemed expendable during the colony's destruction and left behind. Lowe Guele discovered the undamaged machine alongside the Blue Frame. It became the centerpiece of Lowe's salvage operations and mercenary encounters, undergoing constant retrofits such as the Red Frame Mars Jacket and Red Dragon configurations, eventually evolving into the Red Frame Kai after incorporating components from the Turn Delta.

Relationships

The machine's primary operator is the mechanic Lowe Guele, supported in systems management by the artificial intelligence 8. It maintains strong ties with Gai Murakumo of the Serpent Tail mercenary group, who piloted the salvaged Blue Frame. Its primary rival is Rondo Ghina Sahaku, pilot of the Gold Frame. The swordmaster Un Noa served as the source for the martial techniques embedded directly into its operational programming.

Trivia

The name of its famous weapon, 'Gerbera Straight,' is a direct literal English translation of the famed Japanese sword name Kiku-ichimonji, with its blade tang bearing the corresponding inscription. Similarly, its paired katana 'Tiger Pierce' is a direct translation of the sword Kotetsu. Within the story's world, the Red Frame's high visibility inspired the Junk Guild to manufacture and sell the Civilian Astray, complete with outer armor modification kits mimicking its distinct appearance.
