Rick Dias

The Rick Dias is a mass-production mobile suit appearing in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. Serving as the main mass-produced unit for the Anti-Earth Union Group (AEUG), it was jointly created with Anaheim Electronics as the organization's first original machine and stands as a pioneering second-generation mobile suit. By integrating traditional Zeon design philosophy from the Dom series with advanced Federation technologies, the Rick Dias achieved exceptional performance and laid the foundation for the subsequent Zeta Project. Piloted by high-profile figures such as Quattro Bajeena and Amuro Ray, it played a vital role during the Gryps War.

Overview

Appearance

The Rick Dias features a heavy, imposing silhouette derived from Zeon machines like the Dom and Dowas, combined with linear armor plates reminiscent of Federation designs. Its head contains a prominent Gaza-style mono-eye sensor, with an opening hatch on top that reveals the internal vulcan cannon. On its back, the mobile suit carries two flexible Random Binders—which integrate thrusters, propellant tanks, and stabilizers—alongside a specialized weapons rack. Initially deployed in a stealthy black and dark grey color scheme, the model was later officially repainted in a distinctive red scheme based on Quattro Bajeena's unit, though white and tricolor variants also exist in side stories.

Abilities

Constructed with a complete armor of Gundarium Gamma alloy and an early movable frame structure, the Rick Dias possesses exceptional defensive resilience and maneuverability. Its head cockpit features a 360-degree panoramic monitor and doubles as an ejectable emergency pod. The backpack-mounted Random Binders serve as AMBAC units, thrusters, and propellant tanks, while also functioning as detachable shields or impact weapons. Its armament includes a head-mounted 55mm Vulcan Phalanx, a beam saber, twin beam pistols stored on the back, and a 300mm Clay Bazooka capable of firing adhesive shells and HEAT rounds. It can also equip hyper bazookas and shoulder missile launchers.

Background

Developed jointly by the AEUG and Anaheim Electronics prior to the Gryps War, the Rick Dias was initially assigned the development code Gamma Gundam before receiving its official name at the suggestion of Quattro Bajeena. First deployed aboard the assault cruiser Argama, three early production units demonstrated overwhelming tactical superiority against Titans and Federation mobile suits during the incident at Side 7. Throughout the conflict, it served as a trusted unit for veteran commanders in both the AEUG and Karaba. Following the war, surviving units and modified variants continued to see action under Neo Zeon, colonial defense forces, and space pirate factions.

Relationships

The Rick Dias was brought to fruition through the leadership of AEUG commander Blex Forer and the technical teams at Anaheim Electronics. Key pilots include Captain Quattro Bajeena, who named the suit, alongside his loyal wingmen Apolly Bay and Roberto. Amuro Ray famously piloted the machine while operating with Karaba, while Emma Sheen, Kamille Bidan, and Fa Yuiry also handled the mobile suit. The underlying metallurgy of its Gundarium Gamma armor was secured through Char Aznable and engineer Arlette Almage. Throughout its operational service, the machine fought directly against Titans forces piloting the Gundam Mk-II and Hizack.

Trivia

The name Rick Dias combines the Zeon prefix Rick, designating outer space capability, with the surname of explorer Bartholomew Dias. Its armor material, Gundarium Gamma, was named by engineer Arlette Almage as a personal commitment to surpass the original Gundam after experiencing defeat against it in the past. The transition of the machine's official standard color scheme to red was justified in-universe by the intimidation factor of Quattro Bajeena's accomplishments, but it also stemmed from real-world animation constraints: black mobile suits were difficult to distinguish against darkness of outer space, and the animation studio possessed an abundance of red paint.
