Zaku III

A heavy general-purpose mobile suit featured in Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ, developed by Neo Zeon as the direct successor to the iconic Zaku II. Built with robust armor and immense thruster performance, the Zaku III features modular latch systems across its frame to swap out optional gear for specific operational roles. Despite its exceptional performance and adaptability, its large scale and heavy production costs ultimately caused it to lose the mass-production selection to the Doven Wolf.

Overview

A heavy general-purpose mobile suit featured in Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ, developed by Neo Zeon as the direct successor to the iconic Zaku II. Built with robust armor and immense thruster performance, the Zaku III features modular latch systems across its frame to swap out optional gear for specific operational roles. Despite its exceptional performance and adaptability, its large scale and heavy production costs ultimately caused it to lose the mass-production selection to the Doven Wolf.

Appearance

The machine features a head unit equipped with a mono-eye sensor and an integrated mega particle cannon inside its snout intake. Its right shoulder is equipped with an option-rack shield storing spare equipment underneath, while its left shoulder mounts a spiked shoulder armor available in distinct structural variations. Collapsible beam cannons are housed under its front skirt armor. The standard paint scheme is primarily white, though Rakan Dahkaran's custom unit is finished in gray. Units operated by the "Sleeves" feature white armor adorned with decorative sleeve markings on the forearms alongside modified front sub-arms.

Abilities

Powered by a 2,150kW generator and generating 172,600kg of total thrust, the machine achieves high-speed maneuverability comparable to fourth-generation mobile suits. Its fixed armaments consist of a snout-mounted mega particle cannon suited for sudden close-range harassment and waist beam cannons whose barrels double as beam sabers. The reverse of its shoulder shield holds three crackers and two spare sabers. It can wield a bayonet-equipped beam rifle or a chest-mounted heavy bazooka, while its backpack can accommodate 12 missiles or anti-Newtype bio-bits. Specialized attachments such as a mid-range navigation backpack and detachable skirt extension boosters afford extended cruising range.

Background

Developed during the First Neo Zeon War by former Zeonic engineers who fled to Axis, the Zaku III was conceived as the true successor to the Zaku II in response to the Earth Federation's Hi-Zack. Although engineered with top-tier versatility and power, its over-designed structure led to high costs and an enlarged frame. In the trial for Neo Zeon's next main production suit, it was beaten by the Doven Wolf, which packed built-in quasi-psycommu capabilities and required simpler pilot training. Nevertheless, several units entered active duty late in the war, notably piloted by Rakan Dahkaran in Dublin, and remained in service with remnant factions like the Sleeves years later.

Relationships

Neo Zeon commander Rakan Dahkaran served as one of the primary pilots of the Zaku III during the First Neo Zeon War, operating a gray-painted unit in terrestrial combat. In terms of development rivalry, the suit competed directly with the Doven Wolf for selection as Neo Zeon's next mass-produced flagship. Its design philosophy directly inherits the legacy of the One Year War's Zaku II, while its own lineage led to later developments such as the Zaku III Custom and the Zaku IV.

Trivia

Detailed setting concepts for its modular equipment—including the mid-range navigation backpack, anti-Newtype bio-bits, and skirt extension booster—were formally introduced in the March 1987 issue of Model Graphics magazine. In Mobile Suit Gundam UC, a unit deployed by the "Sleeves" faction notably demonstrated high resilience by continuing to attack with its snout mega particle cannon even after losing both of its arms.
