Overview
The ZGMF-X09A Justice Gundam is a prototype mobile suit featured in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED. Developed in secret by ZAFT under the direction of Patrick Zala, it is a nuclear-powered unit and the sister machine to the Freedom Gundam. Piloted by Athrun Zala, it initially served as ZAFT's elite mobile suit before joining the Three Ships Alliance.
Appearance
The suit features a head with green eyes, a classic V-fin, and a prominent crest-like sensor module. Its legs and torso incorporate sharp contours reminiscent of early GAT-X designs and ZAFT machines like the CGUE. It is equipped with a large sub-flight pack mounted on its back, known as the Fatum-00 lifter, and holds beam boomerangs on its shoulders. The manipulators have squared-off fingers.
Abilities
Powered by a nuclear engine with a Neutron Jammer Canceller, the unit maintains Phase Shift Armor indefinitely without power depletion. Its primary component, the Fatum-00 lifter, provides massive thrust and can detach to fight independently or act as a sub-flight platform. Its armament includes four head-mounted 20mm Sagittus CIWS, a Lupus beam rifle, Lacerta beam sabers, shoulder-mounted Bassel beam boomerangs, an anti-beam shield, and multiple cannons integrated into the lifter unit, giving it high versatility in direct mobile suit combat.
Background
Rolled out on April 1, C.E. 71, alongside the Freedom Gundam, the machine was entrusted to Athrun Zala by his father, Patrick Zala, with orders to retrieve the stolen Freedom and eliminate all involved. Following an intense emotional conflict, Athrun aligned with Kira Yamato and Orb, taking the Justice into the Three Ships Alliance. During the Second Battle of Jachin Due, Athrun detonated the unit inside the superweapon GENESIS to prevent the destruction of Earth.
Relationships
The machine is piloted by Athrun Zala and was commissioned by his father, ZAFT Supreme Council Chairman Patrick Zala. It functions as the paired sister unit to the ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam, piloted by Athrun's childhood friend Kira Yamato, fighting alongside it in joint tactical operations.
Trivia
The model number ZGMF-X09A stands for Zero-Gravity Maneuver Fighter, experimental atomic unit number 9. Its name reflects Patrick Zala's political ideology. Early commercial figures and model kits of the unit lacked detached functional parts for the shoulder beam boomerangs, which were later fully realized in modern kits such as the Real Grade series.
