Overview

The Zeong is a heavy Mobile Suit built for Newtypes by the Principality of Zeon, appearing as a central mecha in Mobile Suit Gundam. Bearing the model number MSN-02, it serves as the final machine piloted by Char Aznable during the end of the One Year War. Famous for deploying in an 80% finished state without legs, it stands out for its vast generator output, wireless psycommu capabilities, and monumental final clash against Amuro Ray's Gundam.

Appearance

The unit stands at an overall height of 23.0 meters, noticeably larger than standard Mobile Suits. Its head is equipped with a single pink or purple mono-eye. The machine features a gray, blue, and purple color scheme and notably completely lacks legs below the waist, alongside incomplete armor on its upper arms. Both the head and the forearms are constructed to detach from the main body.

Abilities

Built on test data from psycommu-equipped Zaku models, the machine specializes in all-range attacks via a wired psycommu system. Its detachable forearms feature five individual mega-particle cannon barrels built into the fingers, capable of firing high-output beam salvos along flexible paths to crush warships. It also mounts a mega-particle cannon in the jaw and two in the waist. If the body is destroyed, the head unit can detach to operate independently as a flying beam platform.

Background

Constructed at the A Baoa Qu factory, the unit was handed over to Char Aznable at only 80% completion due to the looming end of the war. Deployed into the space battlefield of A Baoa Qu, it decimated Federation fleets with its remote weaponry. In its final confrontation with Amuro Ray's Gundam, the torso was pierced by a beam rifle, but the detached head launched a terminal exchange inside the fortress, resulting in the mutual destruction of both units.

Relationships

The mecha was piloted by Char Aznable as his ultimate unit in the One Year War. It engaged in a fatal duel against Amuro Ray piloting the RX-78-2 Gundam during the siege of A Baoa Qu. Historical records cite the machine being transferred to Char by either Kycilia Zabi or Gihren Zabi.

Trivia

Director Yoshiyuki Tomino originally envisioned a mechanism where every section of the suit could detach to perform independent beam attacks. The unusual legless silhouette is often attributed as an homage to the Enban Tetsujin from UFO Warrior Dai Apolon. The design later birthed various canonical variations, including the fully legged Perfect Zeong and the massive Neo Zeong.
