Overview
Gundam Aerial is the primary protagonist mobile suit featured in Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury. Developed by Shin Sei Development Corporation, it is brought to the Asticassia School of Technology by its main pilot, Suletta Mercury. Engineered with the GUND Format, the machine exhibits remarkable organic mobility and controls an array of GUND-Bits, allowing it to perform versatile offensive and defensive operations.
Appearance
Designated XVX-016, Gundam Aerial stands 18.0 meters tall at head height and weighs 43.9 metric tons. Its head features unusually large, deep-set camera eyes beneath the main sensor visor, creating a distinctive expressive look, with beam vulcan cannons mounted above the blade antenna. Integrated control nodes known as Shell Units are located across its chest, shoulders, and thighs, emitting light when activated. Inside the cockpit, a panoramic monitor surrounds the pilot with ring-shaped user interface displays lit in blue and orange.
Personality
Rather than being viewed merely as a weapon, Aerial is treated by its pilot Suletta Mercury as a beloved family member with whom she spent her upbringing on Mercury. The machine demonstrates signs of possessing its own consciousness, reacting responsively to Suletta and displaying self-aware behavior, including instances where it communicates subtle child-like presence during intense engagements.
Abilities
Gundam Aerial operates via the GUND Format, yet mysteriously avoids imposing the lethal physical feedback of data storms onto its pilot. Its primary armaments include a beam rifle capable of mounting a beam blade and performing autonomous docking, two backpack-mounted beam sabers, and head-mounted beam vulcans. Its core feature is the Escutcheon system, consisting of 11 GUND-Bit units called bit-staves that execute all-range beam attacks, produce defensive barriers, or combine into a composite shield. When attached directly to the chassis in Bit-on Form, these units boost mobility and defense. Elevating its Permet Score allows Aerial to override electronic interference such as the Antidote system and hijack opponent remote weaponry.
Background
Gundam Aerial grew alongside Suletta Mercury during her youth on Mercury, constructed by Shin Sei Development Corporation as a technical demonstrator derived from the foundation of the earlier Gundam Lfrith. It was brought to the Asticassia School of Technology under the simple code 'AERIAL', concealing its identity as a forbidden GUND-ARM mecha from both the public and Suletta herself. After undergoing multiple duels and defending against surprise military attacks, the suit eventually undergoes extensive overhauls.
Relationships
Gundam Aerial serves as the primary mobile suit of Suletta Mercury, who refers to the mecha as family and its bit units as 'everyone'. Miorine Rembran has also stepped in as a driver under specific duel conditions. The machine maintains a deep historical connection to the prototype mecha Gundam Lfrith and the young pilot Ericht Samaya.
Trivia
Gundam Aerial was designed by mechanical artist JNTHED. The cockpit's internal media storage contains vast entertainment files that provided Suletta with recreation during her isolated childhood on Mercury, inspiring her desire to attend school. Beyond the main anime series, the suit's iconic design aesthetics have been adapted into alternate universe media and multi-format model kits.
