Overview

The MS-07B Gouf is a mass-production ground-combat mobile suit featured in Mobile Suit Gundam. Developed by the Principality of Zeon as an upgraded successor to the terrestrial MS-06J Zaku II, the machine was tailored specifically for high-mobility surface engagements and intense close-quarters combat. Instantly recognizable by its deep blue armor scheme and head-mounted commander blade antenna, the Gouf served as the signature machine for veteran commanders like Captain Ramba Ral.

Appearance

The Gouf features a characteristic blue scheme accented by a mono-eye sensor and a sharp blade antenna mounted on its head. Its heavy silhouette incorporates enlarged spiked shoulder armor and exposed power conduits running along its head and torso. The left arm mounts a dedicated shield and features an integrated five-barreled finger structure, while the right forearm houses an internal whip mechanism. Standard specifications list an overall height of 18.7 meters, a head height of 18.2 meters, an empty weight of 58.5 metric tons, and a fully loaded weight of 75.4 metric tons.

Personality

As a manufactured military weapon, the Gouf possesses no individual mind or emotional disposition. However, unlike the broadly adaptable Zaku II, its specialized focus on close combat reduced overall versatility and required high piloting proficiency, giving the machine a formidable reputation suited for seasoned unit leaders and combat veterans.

Abilities

Constructed from super hard steel alloy armor, the suit demonstrates high structural durability capable of taking direct cannon fire. Driven by a 1,034 kW generator and a total thruster output of 40,700 kg, its primary fixed weapon is a right-arm Heat Rod extending up to 17.5 meters, which delivers high-voltage electric shocks and thermal energy to melt armor or disrupt electronics. The left hand houses an integrated 5-barrel 75mm machine gun for suppressive fire. A Heat Sword stored behind its shield rapidly generates a superheated blade, and the suit can additionally wield Zaku machine guns, Heat Hawks, and Giant Bazookas.

Background

Developed by Zeonic Company during the One Year War, the MS-07 concept was selected over the YMS-08A prototype as Zeon's next-generation ground mobile suit. Approximately 200 units of the MS-07B model were produced, primarily converting existing Zaku II assembly lines at the Granada and California bases. Though its specialized nature yielded lower general versatility than the Zaku II, it served effectively as a commander unit across planetary warzones. The model reached legendary status through Captain Ramba Ral's duels against the Earth Federation's Gundam, paving the way for derivatives like the Gouf Custom and flight-test models.

Relationships

Captain Ramba Ral is the most prominent ace associated with the Gouf, demonstrating its close-range battle potential. Amuro Ray, piloting the Earth Federation's RX-78-2 Gundam, engaged Ramba Ral's Gouf in intense land battles. A custom ceremonial variant adorned with gold engravings was constructed for Major General M'Quve. In later conflict zones, ace pilot Norris Packard famously commanded the modernized MS-07B-3 Gouf Custom variant.

Trivia

The iconic dialogue delivered by Ramba Ral emphasizing the Gouf's distinction from the Zaku II became one of the most celebrated quotes in mecha anime history. Early concepts during the original series' production briefly considered deploying Gouf-type units in space before establishing it strictly as a ground-combat design. The Heat Sword's thermal blade mechanism was adjusted retroactively to maintain lore consistency regarding Zeon's subsequent development of beam weapons. Furthermore, the whip-weapon design influenced later military assets across timelines, including the Hambrabi's Sea Serpent and the GOUF Ignited's Slayer Whip.
