Overview
The Hygogg (MSM-03C) is an amphibious mobile suit featured in the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket and other titles. Developed by the Principality of Zeon under the United Maintenance Plan, it is a complete redesign of the original Gogg.
Appearance
The machine features a single mono-eye sensor, which becomes covered by a shutter sliding up from below the eye slit during underwater transit. It possesses long, articulated arms ending in multi-jointed claws; for swimming, the limbs contract into the shoulder armor, and the legs shorten to reduce hydrodynamic drag. Its arm equipment incorporates three-piece opening fairings to streamline water flow, and a jet pack equipped with a searchlight can be attached to the back.
Abilities
Through weight reduction and a powerful new generator, the unit achieves high mobility and combat capacity far surpassing the original Gogg on land and in water. Its armaments include two arm-mounted beam cannons capable of rapid fire, two articulated Vise Claws, head torpedo launchers, a torso-mounted 120mm machine cannon, four chest torpedo tubes, and hand missile units. Utilizing an optional chemical-fuel jet pack alongside its internal thrusters, it can breach the water surface for high-speed assault landings, though its defensive armor is notably reduced compared to its predecessor.
Background
Rolled out in the final stages of the One Year War, the Hygogg was created under the United Maintenance Plan to standardize parts and cockpit systems while vastly improving amphibious MS performance. During the conflict, members of the Cyclops Team—Mikhail Kaminsky, Gabriel Ramirez Garcia, and Andy Strauss—piloted these machines during a surprise attack on the Earth Federation's Arctic Base. Though introduced too late to alter the war's outcome, surviving units remained active in later years under Zeon remnants and other factions, serving as design references for future amphibious units such as the Capule.
Relationships
Operating under team leader Hardy Steiner in his Z'Gok E, Cyclops Team members Andy Strauss, Mikhail Kaminsky, and Gabriel Ramirez Garcia deployed in Hygoggs during the assault on the Arctic Base, engaging the Earth Federation's defending GM Cold Districts Types.
Trivia
Units painted in the classic color scheme of the original Gogg have appeared in derivative animation such as Gundam Build Fighters Try. The design has been released in plastic model kits including 1/144 scale HGUC and as action figures in the Robot Spirits line.
