Overview
Garrod Ran is the main protagonist of the anime series After War Gundam X. A 15-year-old youth navigating a harsh post-apocalyptic Earth following the Seventh Space War, he dubs himself the Fire Mobile Suit Rider. His destiny alters when a mercenary assignment leads him to meet Tiffa Adill. Falling for her instantly, he chooses to join the crew of the land-battleship Frieden to protect her, eventually evolving from a hardened loner into a dependable pilot and leader.
Appearance
Garrod has dark green hair with bangs hanging between his emerald green eyes. He wears a casual outfit consisting of a red and yellow long-sleeved jacket over a shirt, paired with jeans.
Personality
Despite his energetic and forward-looking nature, growing up in a ruined world initially made him as wary of strangers as a stray cat. He developed a sharp mind and tough exterior so adults would not look down on him. Deep down, however, he is honest, passionate, and fiercely loyal to those he considers allies. His devotion to Tiffa Adill is boundless, driving him to overcome immense obstacles purely out of a desire to protect her.
Abilities
Possessing extensive mechanical knowledge, Garrod can hijack operating Mobile Suits on foot and employs infiltration techniques such as lock-picking and silent movement. As a pilot, he exhibits extraordinary adaptability and uncanny marksmanship, capable of destroying incoming missile swarms at point-blank range or hitting targets at vast distances. Over the course of his battles, he operates the GX-9900 Gundam X, its upgraded GX-9900-DV Gundam X Divider, and the high-powered GX-9901-DX Gundam Double X.
Background
Orphaned in the devastating aftermath of the Seventh Space War, Garrod survived by working as a junk dealer and Mobile Suit hunter, utilizing mechanical skills inherited from his late engineer father. Sent on a job to capture Tiffa Adill, he instead decided to help her escape, leading him to discover the abandoned Gundam X. Although he initially struggled to adjust to collective life aboard the Frieden, guidance from veterans and clashes with formidable adversaries molded him into a key figure fighting for humanity's future.
Relationships
Garrod shares a profound romantic bond with Tiffa Adill, who serves as his emotional center. Captain Jamil Neate acts as a mentor and father figure, guiding his growth as both a pilot and a person. He forms strong friendships with former opponent Carris Nautilus and young leader Willis Aramis. Conversely, he maintains a fierce rivalry with the Frost brothers, Shagia and Olba, who repeatedly target Tiffa and challenge his resolve.
Trivia
Garrod's Japanese name contains a pun based on the phrase 'waga michi o yuku' (going my own way). He is also famous within the franchise for his unconventional attempt early on to put his own Gundam up for auction.
