Chang Wufei

Overview

Chang Wufei is one of the five primary Gundam pilots in New Mobile Report Gundam Wing. Hailing from the L5 colony cluster, he is a descendant of the ancient Chinese Long warrior clan. As the pilot of the Shenlong Gundam and its upgraded successor, the Altron Gundam, Wufei operates under a strict personal code of ethics. Driven to destroy what he perceives as evil, he largely acts independently from the other pilots, constantly evaluating the nature of strength and justice on his solitary quest.

Appearance

Wufei features dark, sharp eyes and black hair styled into a short, low ponytail. His customary outfit includes traditional Chinese martial arts garments or sleeveless tops, paired with wristbands and boots. During his student days, he wore eyeglasses. He routinely carries a Chinese broadsword (Qinglong dao or Liuye dao), keeping one positioned inside his mobile suit cockpit at all times.

Personality

Wufei is deeply proud, uncompromising, and bound to a rigorous moral philosophy. Preferring solitude, he resists joining forces with others and operates largely on his own terms. Guided by warrior honor, he despises unnecessary killing and strongly objects to bringing women or the weak into battle. Beneath his rational tactical mind lies an intense passion; suffering a direct defeat severely harms his pride, plunging him into intense self-doubt regarding the true meaning of peace and righteousness.

Abilities

As a martial artist from a historic warrior lineage, Wufei is a master of hand-to-hand combat and swordplay. He can execute high-speed physical maneuvers by launching off walls and ceilings, and he is capable of intentionally entering a state of suspended animation by suppressing his respiration and metabolism. Highly observant, he excels at perceiving tactical traps set by opponents. Furthermore, he possesses the mental fortitude to control the high-stress ZERO System without suffering breakdown, expertly operating advanced units including the Shenlong Gundam, Altron Gundam, and Wing Gundam Zero.

Background

Originally an academically inclined youth, Wufei abandoned his passive lifestyle after his fiancee, Long Meilan, lost her life protecting their colony. Honoring her sacrifice, he designated his Shenlong Gundam with her nickname 'Nataku' and descended to Earth to join Operation Meteor. Following a devastating duel against OZ leader Treize Khushrenada, he experienced a severe existential crisis, but recovered his resolve through interactions with former officer Sally Po. After navigating the turbulent end of the war and subsequent conflicts, he eventually pledged his service to the peace-keeping agency Preventer.

Relationships

Long Meilan was Wufei's fiancee; her tragic death transformed his life, prompting him to call his mobile suits after her chosen warrior name, Nataku. Treize Khushrenada stands as his ultimate rival whose victory over Wufei sparked an intense ideological fixation. Sally Po acted as a supportive ally during Wufei's period of self-doubt and later brought him into the Preventer organization. Though initially distant from fellow Gundam pilots such as Heero Yuy, Wufei gradually forged a mutual understanding with them through their shared battles.

Trivia

Wufei's name combines the Chinese numeral five with Zhang Fei, the renowned military figure from the Records of the Three Kingdoms. Early concept designs originally envisioned him as an African character before his background was revised to Chinese heritage. Because production adjustments during the television broadcast forced planned backstory episodes to be replaced with recap features, the full details of his past and his relationship with his fiancee were primarily revealed through side-material such as the manga EPISODE ZERO.
