Rey Za Burrel

Overview

Rey Za Burrel is a prominent Mobile Suit pilot belonging to the military forces of ZAFT in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED DESTINY. Stationed aboard the warship Minerva, he serves as an elite red-coat officer alongside comrades Shinn Asuka and Lunamaria Hawke. Typically calm, stoic, and highly disciplined, he acts as a stabilizing presence among his peers. Beneath his composed demeanor lies absolute devotion to Supreme Chairman Gilbert Durandal, driven by a tragic origin and a short genetic lifespan that heavily shape his role in the conflict.

Appearance

Rey is a young man featuring long blonde hair with asymmetrical bangs falling between his eyes, along with blue eyes. As an elite member of the ZAFT military force, he wears a long-sleeved red uniform jacket complete with gloves. His physical appearance is distinguished by his sharp facial expression and trademark red-coat officer attire.

Personality

On the surface, Rey maintains a polite, calm, and highly rational demeanor, frequently acting as a steadying presence for his volatile friend Shinn Asuka. However, his quiet exterior masks a deeply affectionate and childlike dependency toward Gilbert Durandal, whom he reveres. Rey executes Durandal's orders with absolute compliance and can display cold ruthlessness toward anyone opposing the Chairman's vision, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to their shared objectives.

Abilities

Rey is an elite ZAFT pilot who graduated at the top of his military academy class. He demonstrates exceptional piloting skills, initially operating a custom Blaze Zaku Phantom before transitioning to the Legend Gundam. Possessing extraordinary spatial awareness, he can effectively control remote DRAGOON weapon units in battle. Furthermore, Rey is adept at combat data analysis, studying the performance of the Freedom Gundam to craft effective counter-strategies, and possesses refined skill in playing the piano.

Background

Created as an imperfect clone of Al Da Flaga, Rey shares identical genetic origins with Rau Le Creuset and suffers from severely shortened telomeres that dictate a brief lifespan. Rescued from a research facility during childhood by Rau and Gilbert Durandal, he developed an indelible bond with Durandal. Joining the Minerva crew as an elite pilot, he worked tirelessly to advance Durandal's grand vision, the Destiny Plan. During the decisive battle at the space fortress Messiah, a confrontation with Kira Yamato caused him to re-evaluate his existence, culminating in his tragic final choice.

Relationships

Rey holds absolute reverence for Gilbert Durandal, viewing him as a father figure and dedicating his life to fulfilling his goals. He shares a strong brotherhood with Rau Le Creuset, whose shared clone heritage binds them closely. Rey acts as a mentor and loyal friend to Shinn Asuka, guiding the young pilot's growth. While initially harboring intense hostility toward Kira Yamato, Rey is ultimately profoundly influenced by Kira's philosophy during their final battle, while finding maternal solace in Captain Talia Gladys in his final moments.

Trivia

The model designation number 666 assigned to Rey's mobile suit, the Legend Gundam, references the Biblical Number of the Beast, pronounced in-series as triple six. Rey's piano playing at the Carpentaria base became a memorable character motif, reflected in soundtrack pieces dedicated to him. In various video game adaptations such as the Super Robot Wars series, alternative storylines frequently feature secret routes where Rey survives the war.
