Altron Gundam

Overview

The XXXG-01S2 Altron Gundam is a mobile suit featured in Mobile Suit Gundam Wing and its related media. Piloted by Chang Wufei, this close-combat machine is a secretive upgrade of the captured Shenlong Gundam, modified by the five Gundam engineers. Its name is derived from the Chinese reading for 'two-headed dragon', though Wufei continues to affectionately refer to the unit as 'Nataku'.

Appearance

The suit features a green-dominated armor color scheme, a V-fin, and green eyes. It incorporates dragon-inspired features such as mane and fang motifs on the head and shins, alongside a hexagonal fighting sight. Both forearms are equipped with dragon-head-shaped units known as Dragon Fangs. The back mounts moveable random binder wings and a twin beam cannon, while a red Altron Shield is attached to the left shoulder. The Endless Waltz design removes the rear cannons and shield, presenting a streamlined look with enlarged Dragon Fangs.

Personality

As a machine, the mobile suit possesses no sentience or personality of its own. However, it reflects the fierce fighting spirit and uncompromising sense of justice of its pilot, Chang Wufei. It serves as both a powerful instrument of combat and a deeply personal symbol for its operator.

Abilities

Equipped with Dragon Fangs on both arms, the suit can crush target opponents or release intense flames from built-in flamethrowers. Its primary weapon, the Twin Beam Trident, projects three-pronged beam blades from both ends of its shaft. The back-mounted twin beam cannon is articulated on multi-joint arms for multidirectional ranged fire. Enhanced mobility is provided by rear random binders and leg thrusters, making its close-combat capabilities exceptionally high. In its Endless Waltz configuration, defensive features are integrated directly into the Dragon Fangs.

Background

After the land-oriented Shenlong Gundam was captured by OZ, the imprisoned scientists secretly remodeled it at the lunar base to adapt it for space warfare. Escaping prior to complete assembly, it underwent final adjustments at L5 space colonies. It subsequently engaged in battles against OZ and White Fang forces, culminating in a fierce dual against Treize Khushrenada's Tallgeese II during the final conflict. Following the war, it remained operational through subsequent political crisis, including the Mariemaia Rebellion.

Relationships

The machine shares a dedicated bond with its primary pilot, Chang Wufei, who addresses it as 'Nataku'. It famously engaged in a decisive duel against Treize Khushrenada's Tallgeese II. It has also fought high-speed engagements against Heero Yuy's Wing Zero.

Trivia

The name 'Altron' originates from the Chinese pronunciation for 'two-headed dragon'. The Endless Waltz redesign by Hajime Katoki was initially marketed on model kit packaging under the name 'Gundam Nataku', though later merchandise generally uses 'Altron Gundam (EW Version)'. The unit also served as the base for the customized Gunpla known as Gundam Jiuyan Altron in Gundam Build Divers.
