Ares

Ares is the Greek God of War appearing in the Fate series, also identified as Mars in Roman mythology. Originally one of the Twelve Machine Gods of Olympus, his true mechanical form was destroyed by the entity Sefar in Pan-Human History, leading to his remains becoming worshipped in Greece. In Fate/Grand Order during the Olympus Lostbelt arc, he is summoned directly as a pure Divine Spirit Servant—heavily influenced by his noble Roman aspect—to assist Chaldea in their struggle against Zeus.

Overview

Ares is the Greek God of War appearing in the Fate series, also identified as Mars in Roman mythology. Originally one of the Twelve Machine Gods of Olympus, his true mechanical form was destroyed by the entity Sefar in Pan-Human History, leading to his remains becoming worshipped in Greece. In Fate/Grand Order during the Olympus Lostbelt arc, he is summoned directly as a pure Divine Spirit Servant—heavily influenced by his noble Roman aspect—to assist Chaldea in their struggle against Zeus.

Appearance

Ares appears as a massive crimson mechanical humanoid equipped with mechanical arms, legs, robot joints, and a single horn on his head, along with red eyes. His back features pure white wing thrusters, and he wields a giant red greatsword. His head design bears a strong visual resemblance to the helmet worn by Leonidas I. Upon manifestation, both his armor and weaponry show extensive battle damage.

Personality

While traditional Greek myth depicts him as brutal and violent, the summoned Ares manifests primarily as Mars, taking on a highly rational, intelligent, and refined demeanor. Having once been feared as a malevolent entity, he learned to love humanity after being embraced in Rome. He shows deep appreciation and respect for mortals, openly praising the efforts of Chaldea during their battles.

Abilities

Ares possesses massive physical strength and mobility, excelling primarily in close-quarters physical combat using his large red greatsword. He holds the records of Heracles' martial skills and combat techniques, which he passed down to his son Romulus. Among his specialized skills are abilities identified as Sword of the War God, Crimson Strike, and War God's Shout.

Background

In Pan-Human History, Ares was defeated by Sefar, losing his original sword to the invader before his shattered remnants drifted to Greece. In the Olympus Lostbelt, he belonged to the Symbiosis Faction opposing Zeus but was wiped out by the ruling deities. During the final conflict, the residual energy from the destruction of the Huge Bear was utilized in a counter-summoning ritual to materialize his Pan-Human History self as a Servant, allowing him to fight alongside Chaldea against Zeus.

Relationships

Zeus is his biological father, Hera is his mother, and Hephaestus is his full brother, while Athena, Apollo, Artemis, and Heracles are his half-siblings. His offspring include Romulus, Hippolyta, and Penthesilea. He harbours a deep grudge against Altera, who defeated him in the past and claimed his sword, though Altera paradoxically regards him with fondness. Leonidas I is among the mortal rulers who worship him.

Trivia

The sword originally belonging to Ares became the Noble Phantasm Photon Ray after being claimed by Altera. His Roman name, Mars, is the namesake for the planet Mars, home to the real-world Olympus Mons. Additionally, the dragon whose teeth are used to spawn Spartoi skeletal soldiers in Greek mythology was originally a servant of Ares.
