Bigro

The MA-05 Bigro is a mass-produced space combat mobile armor fielded by the Principality of Zeon in Mobile Suit Gundam. Developed by MIP Company, it was designed primarily for anti-warship operations and high-speed hit-and-run tactics. Powered by dual thermonuclear rocket engines, the craft possesses exceptional acceleration that demands high G-force tolerance from its pilot. Featuring a distinctive bird-like silhouette equipped with heavy firepower and giant mechanical claws, it represents one of Zeon's earliest successful mobile armor deployments during the One Year War.

Overview

Appearance

The Bigro features a wide, green-colored fuselage with a bird-like silhouette dominated by a prominent beak-shaped nose cone. It is equipped with a single pink mono-eye. The front beak doubles as a protective armor cover shielding the generator and revealing a large central mega-particle cannon when opened. Quadruple-tube missile launchers are mounted on both sides of the main body, and two massive three-clawed mechanical arms are attached underneath, contributing to its overall height of 23.6 meters and length of 45.5 meters.

Abilities

Propelled by dual thermonuclear rocket engines, the Bigro achieves supreme speed and acceleration, enabling effective hit-and-run attacks. Its primary long-range weapon is a high-output mega-particle cannon situated in its nose, supported by two 4-tube missile launchers for barrage fire. For close encounters, two massive claw arms serve both as AMBAC maneuvering devices and powerful grapple weapons capable of seizing enemy mobile suits or vehicles. However, the machine suffers from notable blind spots, making it vulnerable if an opponent manages to draw close in hand-to-hand combat.

Background

Developed by MIP Company based on the prototype MIP-X1, the Bigro underwent testing at Granada before limited mass production commenced in April during the One Year War. Produced in small quantities due to high manufacturing costs, it was deployed to key strongholds for defense and anti-ship sorties. In the television series, Lieutenant Tokwan piloted a Bigro against the White Base crew. He overwhelmed Amuro Ray's Gundam with extreme G-forces after capturing it with the unit's claw arms, but was defeated when Amuro regained consciousness and shot the exposed mega-particle cannon. Multiple units were later fielded during the Battle of A Baoa Qu.

Relationships

Lieutenant Tokwan served as the Bigro's primary pilot in the original series, executing high-speed tactics under the command of Char Aznable, who commandeered the unit along with the Zanzibar. Amuro Ray, piloting the RX-78-2 Gundam for the Earth Federation Forces, engaged Tokwan in intense space combat; despite being ensnared by the Bigro's claws, Amuro ultimately succeeded in destroying the mobile armor. Other pilots associated with the machine and its tactical variants in expanded lore include Kelly Layzner, Kurt, and test pilot Robert Gilliam.

Trivia

The name Bigro is theorized to derive from a corruption of the phrase Big Claw, referring to its prominent manipulator arms. While Mobile Suit Gundam established a grounded real-robot aesthetic, the Bigro's bird-like appearance retains a stylized quality reminiscent of classical mechanical beasts. It laid the engineering foundation for several successor mobile armors within Zeon's development line, including the Val Walo and Big-Lang. In commercial merchandise, it was produced as a 1/550 scale plastic model kit featuring functional opening and closing claws.
