Braw Bro

The Braw Bro (model number MAN-03) is a prototype Mobile Armor developed by the Principality of Zeon's Flanagan Institute, appearing in the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam. It holds the distinction of being the first weapon system built specifically for Newtypes to incorporate the Psycommu system. Designed around a large, boat-like central body without conventional limbs, the Braw Bro utilizes remote wire-guided beam turrets to pioneer the tactical concept of all-range attacks in spatial combat. Beyond its role as a combat platform, the unit also served as an experimental testbed for crew-split remote weaponry.

Overview

Appearance

The machine features a massive chassis resembling an assault boat, completely lacking arms or legs. Numerous maneuvering verniers that resemble weapon muzzles are positioned along its outer hull. Its standard color scheme consists of grey and purple, though it appears in black and orange in GUNDAM EVOLVE. The body comprises three main separable blocks, which expand to five if counting the detachable engine mountings. It mounts four wire-guided turrets, each about the size of a mobile suit torso. In Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt, it also includes a monoeye rail along the upper center section.

Abilities

Equipped with the Psycommu system, the unit performs all-range attacks by deploying four wire-guided mega particle turrets—two double-barreled and two single-barreled. Powered directly from the main reactor through conductive cables measuring up to one kilometer, these weapons maintain a rapid rate of fire capable of destroying a Gundam's shield in a single shot. Lacking limbs for AMBAC, maneuvering relies entirely on external verniers. The hull can separate into three independent blocks for pilot escape and data preservation. While Oldtypes can operate the craft by dividing duties among up to five crew members, a skilled Newtype can manage all flying and gunnery systems individually.

Background

Developed by the Flanagan Institute as Zeon's pioneering Newtype mobile armor, the Braw Bro underwent initial flight testing near Side 6 under Lieutenant Simus Al Baharov. During a surprise confrontation with Federal forces, the machine suffered damage and was forced to detach its right block to escape. After undergoing repairs and recalibration, it was handed over to Captain Challia Bull for combat deployment. Assigned to strike the White Base forces near Solomon, the Braw Bro launched an all-range assault that pushed Amuro Ray and his RX-78-2 Gundam to their operational limits. However, Amuro managed to breach its defenses, destroying the central hull with beam rifle fire and killing both Bull and Simus.

Relationships

The Braw Bro's history is closely tied to key Zeon and Federation personnel. Lieutenant Simus Al Baharov served as its initial test pilot and co-pilot during observation. Captain Challia Bull was assigned as its principal Newtype commander, mastering its complex Psycommu weapons to launch overwhelming individual attacks. In combat near Solomon, the unit engaged Federal ace Amuro Ray, whose RX-78-2 Gundam pushed its internal systems past their heat limits before delivering the fatal shot. In spin-off materials, other Zeon aviators such as Yuiman Carlisle and Guster Piper are also documented as operating units of this model.

Trivia

As the precursor to later psychic machines like the Elmeth and Zeong, the Braw Bro established the archetype for remote all-range attack weapons throughout the Gundam franchise. Beyond the original television anime, it appears as a playable or enemy unit in gaming titles like Super Robot Wars and Mobile Suit Gundam: Federation vs. Zeon. The design has been reinterpreted across different series: Mobile Suit Gundam THE ORIGIN presents it with a single seat and a more organic shape, while Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt incorporates I-field generators and a monoeye. Additionally, its concept heavily influenced the Kikeroga in Gundam GQuuuuuuX.
