Overview
Clotho Buer is a character from Mobile Suit Gundam SEED who serves as a mobile suit pilot for the Earth Alliance. Classified as a Stage 3 Boosted Man (Biological CPU) alongside teammates Orga Sabnak and Shani Andras, he pilots the GAT-X370 Raider Gundam. Though conditioned for high-intensity military operations and high-speed assault tactics, he retains distinctive personal quirks such as an obsession with handheld games. His story highlights the tragic treatment of enhanced soldiers used as living weapons during the Cosmic Era conflict.
Appearance
Clotho is portrayed as a young male with short, spiky hair. He wears the standard military uniform of the Earth Alliance. During non-combat standby periods, he is regularly depicted holding and playing a portable video game console known as the Great Wonder Swan XXX.
Personality
Due to a microchip embedded in his brain, Clotho feels no fear or anxiety, allowing him to fight with relentless harshness. Although he becomes intensely excited during combat, he maintains better tactical discipline than Shani Andras, often supporting Orga Sabnak and reprimanding Shani for acting alone. Outside of battle, he is an avid player of shooting games. He typically uses polite personal pronouns and exhibits a distinct speech habit of exclaiming destructive two-kanji terms while launching attacks.
Abilities
Clotho possesses advanced mobile suit piloting skills, particularly in mastering the Raider Gundam's high-speed hit-and-run maneuvers. During the engagement at Mendel, he pushed the Freedom Gundam into extreme distress, and at Jachin Due, he successfully withstood assault from the METEOR-equipped Justice Gundam. His battle experience includes destroying multiple enemy units such as M1 Astray and GuAIZ mobile suits.
Background
Originating from the Rodonia facility, Clotho was conditioned as a biological CPU for the Earth Alliance. He made his combat debut during the invasion of Orb, launching in the Raider Gundam from the landship Powell. He repeatedly fought on the front lines alongside Orga and Shani against main enemy forces. At the final Battle of Jachin Due, he became the last remaining member of his unit. Left stranded after the destruction of the mothership Dominion, depleted of power, and suffering severe withdrawal symptoms, he fell into severe mental confusion before being defeated in combat by Yzak Joule's Duel Gundam.
Relationships
He serves alongside Orga Sabnak and Shani Andras in the Earth Alliance Boosted Man team, providing tactical aid to Orga while attempting to keep Shani's erratic actions in check. He operated under the command structure of Murta Azrael and Natarle Badgiruel. He fought fiercely against enemy pilots Kira Yamato, Athrun Zala, and Yzak Joule, exchanging words about his survival philosophy with Athrun during battle. His final fight was against Yzak Joule, who delivered the fatal blow using equipment borrowed from the Buster Gundam.
Trivia
His family name Buer stems from one of the 72 demons of the Ars Goetia. His incomplete final shouted statement prior to his death inspired extensive fan speculation for years, resulting in one widely discussed line being officially adopted as his defeat line in the Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Vs. game series. Additionally, in select spin-off games like SD Gundam G Generation DS, players can fulfill specific requirements to recruit him into their player party.
