Cucuruz Doan

Overview

Cucuruz Doan is a character appearing in Mobile Suit Gundam and the feature film Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan's Island. A former elite ace pilot for the Principality of Zeon who previously commanded a premier mobile suit squad, he abandoned the military after growing traumatized by the horrors of war. Seeking redemption, he settled on a remote island to care for war orphans through a self-sufficient lifestyle, continuously fighting off intruding Federation and Zeon forces using his customized Zaku II to protect the children.

Appearance

In the original animated series, Doan is depicted with a rugged, mature face, whereas the theatrical movie renders him with a noticeably younger appearance. His customized Zaku II features a uniquely elongated and oversized head structure resulting from repeated hand-repairs. The mobile suit exhibits severe external damage, missing armor plates, and a lack of standard firearms, often armed with only a Heat Hawk or bare hands. In specific video games, his machine glows golden upon triggering Hyper Mode.

Personality

Although taciturn and socially clumsy, leading others to easily misjudge him, Doan is fundamentally sincere, honest, and warmhearted. He harbors deep remorse over civilian casualties from his combat past alongside an intense aversion to war. He treats the war orphans under his care with profound parental affection, willing to face death and fight former allies to shield them from harm.

Abilities

Doan is a master mobile suit pilot whose piloting prowess was once favorably compared to the Red Comet. Operating without firearm munitions, he specializes in mobile suit hand-to-hand martial arts and tactical rock throwing, using hurled boulders to detonate incoming missiles and destroy enemy craft. Utilizing only bare hands or a Heat Hawk, he can overpower high-performance machines like the Gundam and elite squad units, disabling opponents without lethal force.

Background

Formerly the commander of Zeon's elite Southern Cross Corps, Doan deserted after becoming traumatized by civilian casualties and refusing orders to harm surviving children. He sought refuge on Alegranza Island in the Canary Islands, taking in twenty war orphans to lead a peaceful, self-sufficient lifestyle centered around goat farming and lighthouse living. To prevent the misuse of a hidden underground missile silo beneath the island crater, he secretly dispatched false reports to Zeon command. When Federation pilot Amuro Ray arrived and the Southern Cross Corps pursued him, Doan fought to protect his adopted family. Following the battle, Amuro cast Doan's Zaku II into the ocean to sever his connection to war, granting him a peaceful life with the children.

Relationships

Doan is beloved by the war orphans on the island, who regard him as a trusted father figure. Though he initially engaged in battle with Federation pilot Amuro Ray, the two arrived at a deep mutual understanding. His former comrades in the Southern Cross Corps, including Egba Atler, Danan, Selma, and Wald, turned into deadly adversaries dispatched to eliminate him. Additionally, Vice General M'Quve of Zeon targeted Doan's island due to suspicions regarding the unresponsive nuclear missile silo.

Trivia

The distorted facial proportions and misshapen silhouette of Doan's Zaku II in the original 1979 anime originated from animation errors, which later became an iconic, beloved feature among fans. In video games such as the SD Gundam G Generation series, fulfilling specific conditions allows Doan to trigger a humorous Hyper Mode inspired by Mobile Fighter G Gundam, causing his Zaku II to glow golden.
