Heavygun
The RGM-109 Heavygun is a mass-produced general-purpose mobile suit used by the Earth Federation Forces, originating in the anime film Mobile Suit Gundam F91. Developed by Anaheim Electronics as a successor to the long-serving RGM-89 Jegan, it was designed in response to the downsizing trends proposed by SNRI to curb military spending. Standing smaller than traditional mobile suits, the Heavygun represents the Earth Federation's transition into early small-format mobile suit deployment across various space colonies.
Overview
The RGM-109 Heavygun is a mass-produced general-purpose mobile suit used by the Earth Federation Forces, originating in the anime film Mobile Suit Gundam F91. Developed by Anaheim Electronics as a successor to the long-serving RGM-89 Jegan, it was designed in response to the downsizing trends proposed by SNRI to curb military spending. Standing smaller than traditional mobile suits, the Heavygun represents the Earth Federation's transition into early small-format mobile suit deployment across various space colonies.
Appearance
The Heavygun features a compact body frame measuring 15.8 meters in head height and weighing 9.5 metric tons. Its head is equipped with built-in vulcan guns and an integrated searchlight. The waist region includes side-mounted launchers holding eight total hand grenades, as well as a rear-mounting latch designed to store its beam rifle. It carries a physical forearm shield.
Abilities
Utilizing a generator derived from the Jegan J-Type, the Heavygun benefits from reduced total mass, resulting in enhanced mobility and agility over older standard units. Because its generator power output is insufficient for a beam shield, it employs a solid physical shield. Its primary armament consists of two internal head vulcans and a full-barrel beam rifle fitted with a sub-sensor limiter to restrict damage within space colonies. It also carries a beam saber capable of rapid wrist-spin maneuvers and eight waist-stored hand grenades.
Background
Beginning development around Universal Century 0110, Anaheim Electronics spent five years completing the Heavygun to satisfy the Earth Federation's cost-cutting requirements. Despite criticism from SNRI regarding its conservative design, it achieved formal adoption as an interim unit before full second-generation mobile suits were ready. During the Cosmo Babylonia War in UC 0123, it fought against superior Crossbone Vanguard forces. Modified variants of the frame continued to serve local defense forces years later, including action in the Jupiter War and within independent colonies in the UC 0150s.
Relationships
Birgit Pirjo served as a notable pilot of the Heavygun during the defense of the Frontier IV colony. He fought alongside Seabook Arno, who piloted the Gundam F91. During their engagement against the autonomous Bug weapons, Birgit's technique of rapidly spinning the Heavygun's beam saber via wrist rotation directly influenced Seabook's subsequent combat style.
Trivia
Due to sharing a similar color scheme with the G-Cannon, screen appearances featuring a G-Cannon without its shoulder cannons have frequently been misidentified as the Heavygun. In merchandise, it received a 1/100 scale plastic model kit featuring opening waist grenade racks and rifle-mounting gimmicks. The Heavygun's basic frame and design lineage served as the foundation for multiple variant units, including the Heavygun II, the Hardygun, and the Silhouette Gundam.
