Overview
Ino Abbav is a supporting character in the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ. Originating from the Side 1 colony Shangri-La, he initially worked as a machinery scavenger alongside his childhood friends, including Judau Ashta. After being drawn into the conflict aboard the AEUG warship Argama, he officially joined the vessel's crew as a key member of the Gundam Team. Despite his gentle nature, Ino proves to be a versatile asset throughout the First Neo Zeon War, fulfilling vital roles as a mobile suit pilot, mechanic, and bridge operator.
Appearance
Ino is a fourteen-to-fifteen-year-old youth with a tall, slender physical frame. His light brown hair is styled into a distinctive bowl cut. During a covert reconnaissance mission, he temporarily disguises himself in female clothing, possessing gentle facial features that allow him to pass convincingly as a woman.
Personality
Ino is soft-spoken, reserved, and deeply devoted to his friends. Among his more boisterous companions from Shangri-La, he often acts as a mild-mannered mediating force, occasionally allowing himself to be swayed by their stronger personalities. Beneath his gentle exterior lies a resilient moral strength, demonstrated by his willingness to risk himself to protect his peers. He displays remarkably refined table manners, suggesting a polite background. As he endures the trials of war, he gains self-confidence, evolving into a dependable individual who can express his convictions clearly.
Abilities
Ino exhibits strong aptitude in both mobile suit piloting and mechanical maintenance. On his first flight, he successfully operated the Core Top and executed a mid-air docking procedure. He demonstrated notable combat handling by defending against Gaza-C units using the makeshift Z Zaku—a Zeta Gundam retrofitted with a Zaku II head—despite severely restricted panoramic monitor visibility. In addition to operating the ZZ Gundam in desert operations, he piloted the Dodai Kai and FXA-08R Mega Rider. He eagerly studied maintenance under Astonaige Medoz to serve as a crew mechanic and bridge staff, and later helped assemble the Wizards Gundam from salvaged parts.
Background
Ino grew up in the Side 1 colony Shangri-La, earning a livelihood as a scrapper alongside Judau Ashta and their circle of childhood friends. His life shifted dramatically when the AEUG warship Argama arrived at the colony, drawing the group into the First Neo Zeon War as active crew members. Throughout the campaign, Ino endured numerous hazardous situations—including being taken hostage and having explosives strapped to his body—while reliably supporting the ship's operations until the war's conclusion. Following the armistice, he gathered at the lunar city Von Braun to see off Judau and Roux Louka prior to their voyage to Jupiter. In U.C. 0094, he remained involved in efforts searching for Amuro Ray's final suit.
Relationships
Ino shares a close friendship with Judau Ashta from their early days in Shangri-La and maintains a warm relationship with Judau's younger sister, Leina Ashta. His intense loyalty to his friends was highlighted when he shielded Beecha Oleg and Mondo Agake after their treacherous schemes against the Argama. On board the ship, chief mechanic Astonaige Medoz took a strong liking to Ino due to his eager initiative in learning machine maintenance. He also maintains solid, supportive working relationships with Captain Bright Noa and fellow Gundam Team pilot Roux Louka.
Trivia
During a covert infiltration of the Neo Zeon flagship Sadalahn, Ino disguised himself as a female alongside Judau Ashta; while Judau was turned away at the entrance due to an unconvincing appearance, Ino successfully entered the ship without raising suspicion. Additionally, the improvised unit he piloted—a Zeta Gundam fitted with a Zaku II head—became famously recognized among fans by the moniker 'Z Zaku.'
