Overview
Iwark Briar is a supporting character featured in the first arc of the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam AGE. A 38-year-old resident living in the impoverished lower levels of the space colony Fardain, he is a compassionate man with a strong sense of justice. He becomes an early ally to the protagonist Flit Asuno and his companions during their stay on the colony. Despite appearing in only three episodes of the animated television broadcast, his distinctive physical design and memorable scenes made him a highly recognizable figure among viewers.
Appearance
Iwark Briar is a 38-year-old man with blonde hair and a distinctive cleft chin. He possesses an unusually top-heavy build, featuring an immensely muscular upper body contrasted against disproportionately thin lower legs. When operating industrial machinery, he wears a safety helmet.
Personality
Iwark is a warm-hearted and intensely righteous individual who cannot turn a blind eye to those in trouble. As a devoted adoptive father, he displays tender affection and deep care toward his young daughter, working hard to provide for her despite their impoverished surroundings. Though resentful of the social inequalities and harsh conditions imposed on the colony's lower-class residents, he remains a humble and dependable figure who readily assists strangers in need.
Abilities
Iwark is skilled in operating the industrial mobile suit CMS-328 Desperado. Using basic construction tools such as a heat shovel and pickaxe, he demonstrated sufficient piloting ability to defeat a military-grade Zila mobile suit in combat. He also owns and operates a large transport vehicle. According to video game adaptations, he is a retired military veteran.
Background
Iwark lived in the slum district of the space colony Fardain, raising his adopted daughter Riria Briar while making a living through salvage and scrap collection. When violence between the rival factions Zalam and Euba spilled into the city, he sheltered Flit Asuno and Emily Amond from the crossfire. Later, when Riria wandered off into the upper levels, he boarded his industrial machine to rescue her. He further assisted Flit's party by lending them his personal truck to aid in a rescue operation after their allies were captured.
Relationships
Iwark shares a protective and loving bond with his adopted daughter, Riria Briar. Upon meeting Flit Asuno, Emily Amond, and Vargas Dyson, he shows great kindness toward them, providing shelter and lending them his transport vehicle during their efforts inside the colony.
Trivia
Iwark gained widespread internet popularity due to a dramatically stylized scene in the anime where he passionately decries the societal injustice faced by the slum residents. This phenomenon led him to win first place in an official male character popularity poll for a home video release with 72.0% of the total vote. His popularity resulted in the production of a dedicated character song titled 'Desperado Blues', and he has since been featured as a playable pilot in various mobile and arcade game adaptations.
