Overview
Mondo Agake is a supporting character from Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ who serves as a mobile suit pilot for the Anti-Earth Union Group. Originally a teenage junk scavenger from the Shangri-la space colony in Side 1, he is a long-standing companion of Judau Ashta. After boarding the flagship Argama, he joins the Gundam Team and fights through the First Neo Zeon War. Although initially depicted as an opportunistic troublemaker, his experiences on the battlefield lead him to mature into a reliable and steadfast fighter.
Appearance
Mondo Agake is a young male character of noticeably short physical stature. He is visually characterized by his brown hair styled in a distinct bowl cut and his prominent, unusually thick eyebrows.
Personality
At the beginning of his journey, Mondo is portrayed as a flighty opportunist who routinely follows Beecha Oleg into self-serving schemes, such as trying to steal mobile suits or changing sides for self-preservation. However, meeting Rasara Moon of the Light Tribe and witnessing her tragedy marks a turning point. Confronted by her sacrifice, he sheds his selfish attitude, develops a deep sense of responsibility, and becomes a deeply loyal companion committed to protecting others.
Abilities
Mondo possesses high technical proficiency in electronics and mechanical maintenance, regularly helping chief mechanic Astonage Medoz service mobile suits aboard the ship. After receiving formal piloting lessons during his brief time at Axis, he develops into a capable mobile suit pilot, successfully operating machines including the Hyaku Shiki, Gundam Mk-II, Mega Rider, and Neo Core Fighter.
Background
Mondo grew up scavenging scrap in the Shangri-la colony alongside Judau Ashta and their friends. His life shifted radically when the Anti-Earth Union Group flagship Argama docked at the colony, involving his group in the war. Initially causing havoc by attempting to steal military hardware and briefly surrendering to Axis, he unexpectedly gained pilot training during his captivity. Returning to the Argama, he experienced a pivotal tragedy when Rasara Moon was killed, inspiring him to take the war seriously. He served in the Gundam Team through the end of the conflict and eventually saw off Judau Ashta and Roux Louka as they departed for Jupiter.
Relationships
Mondo maintains his closest partnership with Beecha Oleg, evolving from a dependent follower into a fully equal partner-in-crime and battle comrade. He shares a long-standing childhood friendship with Judau Ashta and Leina Ashta from their days in Shangri-la. Mondo holds a tragic romantic affection for Rasara Moon of the Light Tribe, whose selfless death serves as the primary catalyst for his emotional growth. Aboard the Argama, he serves under Captain Bright Noa and works closely with lead mechanic Astonage Medoz.
Trivia
In the Super Robot Wars strategy game series, Mondo is frequently used by players despite his low battle statistics because he learns the valuable Exhaust spirit command, which reduces enemy morale. In Gihren's Greed: Menace of Axis V, he is available immediately in Tem Ray's storyline, where his surprisingly high durability stat makes him useful early on. In the spin-off manga Mobile Suit Gundam Pulitzer, he is shown assisting in restoring a Gundam Mk-II known as the Wizards Gundam using salvaged spare parts.
