Overview
Norris Packard is a character from the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team. Holding the rank of Colonel in the Principality of Zeon forces on the Southeast Asian front, he is a veteran ace pilot dedicated to the noble Sahalin family. Serving as the executive officer under Rear Admiral Ginias Sahalin, Norris manages the military and defensive operations of the secret Apsalus development base, earning deep trust and respect from frontline soldiers.
Appearance
Norris is a heavily built man with a rugged, muscular physique and a stern, intimidating facial appearance. He is characterized by a bony face, sharp sanpaku eyes, and a distinctive hairline that recedes. When entering combat, whether piloting mobile suits or fighter aircraft, he wears a personalized black custom normal suit.
Personality
Norris embodies the honorable and pragmatic nature of a true warrior, possessing a calm, dignified demeanor alongside polite and gentlemanly manners. Though a high-ranking commander, he remains approachable, considerate of his subordinates, and sensitive to the feelings of others. Rather than offering blind obedience, he adheres to a samurai-like code of honor. He despises the growing coldness and instability of Ginias Sahalin, yet harbors profound fatherly affection for Aina Sahalin, treating her with protective tenderness.
Abilities
Norris is an exceptionally skilled pilot capable of operating both mobile suits and fighter jets like the Dopp with superior tactical awareness. In his Gouf Custom, he employs the heat wire for three-dimensional airborne tactics, utilizes smoke and terrain for ambush attacks, and targets enemy weapon systems and ammunition racks with extreme precision. Throughout his service, he has piloted units including the Ground Type Zaku II, Gouf Flight Type, a custom purple-painted Zaku I Q-Type, and the Gouf Custom.
Background
Having served the Sahalin family for many years, Norris took charge of military operations at the mountain base in Southeast Asia. During the final phase of the conflict, he sortied alone in his Gouf Custom to clear an evacuation path for the hospital ship Kerguelen against the Earth Federation's 08th MS Team. Recognizing that Federal pilot Shiro Amada was the man Aina loved, Norris executed a strategy to destroy all threat-posing mass-produced Guntanks without taking Shiro's life, successfully completing his mission at the cost of his own.
Relationships
Norris serves as the deputy to Ginias Sahalin, though he secretly harbors disgust toward Ginias's increasing cruelty. Conversely, he acts as a surrogate father to Ginias's younger sister, Aina Sahalin, cherishing her deeply and earning her complete trust. During battle against the Earth Federation, he engages Shiro Amada, ultimately refusing to kill him out of respect for Aina's feelings. He also commanded the trust of his direct subordinates, including his late aide Masado.
Trivia
Norris's formidable performance in the Gouf Custom reshaped the depiction of the Gouf line in the Gundam franchise, establishing it as an iconic machine for ace pilots in subsequent media.
