Overview

The RGM-79 Powered GM is an experimental mobile suit featured in the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory. Developed by the Earth Federation Forces three years after the One Year War as part of the Gundam Development Project, it serves as a high-performance evaluation unit modified from the GM Kai to collect data for next-generation mobile suit technology.

Appearance

Built upon the modified GM Kai frame, this unit features a heavy, oversized backpack identical in design to that of Gundam Development Unit 1, alongside prominent high-thrust boosters and shock absorber mechanisms. Its fixed armament includes twin head-mounted 60mm vulcan guns and a beam saber, complemented by standard Federation hand-carried gear comprising a bullpup machine gun, hyper bazooka, and shield.

Abilities

Constructed with titanium-ceramic composite armor, the unit possesses a 1,650 kW generator output and a combined thruster force of 71,480 kg. It boasts a 30 percent increase in thrust and mobility compared to the standard GM Kai, featuring a rapid 1.6-second 180-degree attitude change time, and effectively utilizes standard-issue machine guns, bazookas, and close-combat weaponry.

Background

Stationed at the Torrington Base in Australia during Universal Century 0083, several units underwent test operations to gather performance data. When the Delaz Fleet launched a surprise raid to hijack Gundam Development Unit 2, pilot Dick Allen scrambled in the Powered GM to give pursuit, but the machine was ambushed and destroyed in action by a enemy Dom Tropen.

Relationships

Dick Allen served as the primary test pilot who operated the machine during its evaluation and subsequent emergency combat deployment. Fellow pilot Chuck Keith notably commented on the unit's oversized backpack design during test trials.

Trivia

Dialogue regarding the bulky backpack being better suited for a Zaku is widely regarded by fans as an allusion to the future development of the Hi-Zack. The unit inspired several derivative designs, including the Gundam Duranta in side-story games and the Powered GM Cardigan in Gundam Build Fighters Try. In various Gundam video games, it is frequently depicted as one of the most powerful units among GM-lineage mobile suits.
