Overview
The ZGMF/A-262B Strike Freedom Gundam Type II is a mobile suit appearing in the anime film Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM. It is an upgraded version of the ZGMF-X20A Strike Freedom Gundam, primarily piloted by Kira Yamato of the global peace-monitoring organization COMPASS. Retaining the core performance of its predecessor, it integrates modernized technologies and enhanced backpack adaptation features.
Appearance
Standing 18.88 meters tall and weighing 82.09 metric tons, the unit utilizes Variable Phase Shift armor featuring gold-glowing frame joints and a red gem-like component on its forehead. While maintaining the profile of the original model, its shoulders, forearms, front and rear skirts, backpack, and wing units feature modified contours. The calf thrusters have been converted from retractable to larger fixed units, and hardpoints are added to the side and rear armors.
Abilities
Powered by a new type of fusion reactor, the unit is fitted with a panoramic monitor cockpit containing a sub-seat. Its upper backpack and Super DRAGOON wings can be detached for equipment swapping. Armaments include head-mounted Picus 2 31mm CIWS and the high-energy Disruptor beam cannon, a chest-mounted Tvashtar ultra-high impulse cannon, waist-mounted Folans Asta railguns, Acuta Lacerta beam sabers, and forearm-mounted Egregio beam shields. It also carries high-energy beam rifles, optional hand-held railguns, and remote Super DRAGOON beam assault cannons capable of generating defensive barrier fields and emitting pink energy wings.
Background
Rebuilt by Erica Simmons and Morgenroete Inc. following the Freedom Hijack incident, the mecha was privately funded by Cagalli Yula Athha and kept hidden in an underground hangar on Akatsuki Island for equipment testing. Deployed aboard the battleship Millennium, it was primarily assigned to Kira Yamato, with Athrun Zala also operating it during combat operations. When pushed to its thermal and physical endurance limits against the Black Knight Squad, it purged its backpack wings to combine with the Proud Defender.
Relationships
Kira Yamato serves as the machine's primary pilot, with Athrun Zala acting as a secondary operator and remote controller during battle. Cagalli Yula Athha provided private backing for its restoration, which was overseen by engineer Erica Simmons. The mobile suit docks with the MDE262S Proud Defender to become the ZGMF/A-262PD-P Mighty Strike Freedom Gundam.
Trivia
The mecha's refined visuals reverse-engineer structural detail trends established by previous high-end model kits and action figures released over the years. Specific elements on its side armors and thrusters explicitly evoke the design lineage of the original ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam.
