Overview

Tem Ray is a character appearing in Mobile Suit Gundam and related works across the Gundam media franchise. Serving as a technical officer holding the rank of Captain in the Earth Federation Forces, he is the father of the main protagonist, Amuro Ray. As a pivotal engineer behind the Earth Federation's V Project, he played a fundamental role in designing the RX-78 Gundam and overseeing the development of the Guncannon.

Appearance

Following his accident that caused hypoxia, Tem Ray displays an exhausted facial expression, a pronounced stooped posture, and a generally unkempt appearance. In Mobile Suit Gundam The Origin, he is depicted operating within spaces fitted with supercomputer hardware and physically assembling small-scale manipulators.

Personality

Tem Ray is a serious and stubborn technician who judges matters strictly by his own professional standards. As a military officer, he can demonstrate pragmatic coldness, prioritizing the preservation of military assets over civilian evacuation. Despite his workaholic nature, he harbours genuine fatherly concern for Amuro Ray, keeping a current picture of his son in his quarters. He profoundly regrets seeing youth dragged into combat and strives to finish the V Project to end the war quickly. However, after suffering hypoxia, his rational personality deteriorates, leaving him fixated on outdated technical delusions.

Abilities

Tem Ray possesses extraordinary expertise in mechanical engineering and mobile suit development. As the central developer of the V Project, he spearheaded the structural design of the RX-78 Gundam and significantly contributed to the Guncannon. In Mobile Suit Gundam The Origin, he functions as the head of mobile suit development at Anaheim Electronics, setting up supercomputers and constructing precision manipulators. In certain video game iterations, he is also capable of piloting mobile suits and battleships.

Background

Originally a space colony construction engineer, Tem Ray transferred to the Earth Federation military as a technical officer at the outbreak of the One Year War. While supervising mobile suit testing at Side 7, he was caught in a surprise attack by Zeon forces. An explosion blew him into space through a breach in the colony hull. Saved by his spacesuit, prolonged exposure led to severe hypoxia and permanent brain damage. He eventually drifted to the neutral colony Side 6, where he reunited with Amuro in a compromised mental state before disappearing from the main narrative.

Relationships

He shares a tragic dynamic with his son, Amuro Ray; while he genuinely cared for him, his focus on work created distance, leading to a heartbreaking parting on Side 6. His marriage to Kamaria Ray ended in total living separation due to his workaholism and conflicting values. He expresses deep empathy toward Bright Noa regarding young people being drawn into military service. In Mobile Suit Gundam The Origin, he is identified as a direct student of Dr. Minofsky, maintaining deep respect alongside a strong desire to surpass his master.

Trivia

The junk component he handed to Amuro became famous as the recurring item Tem Ray's Circuit across various video game adaptations. In the Giren's Ambition strategy game series, he headlines an alternate scenario leading his own faction known as the Tem Ray Army. Additionally, in the SD Gundam Gaiden fantasy universe, characters sharing his face appear in roles such as a skilled blacksmith or a wise advisor across different chapters.
