Overview
Theseus is a Saber-class Servant featured in the Fate series, including Fate/Grand Order. Originating from Greek mythology, he is the famous hero of Athens best known for slaying the Minotaur of the Cretan labyrinth and adventuring alongside the Argonauts. Despite his legendary status, his past actions left him deeply conflicted about the nature of his own righteousness.
Appearance
Theseus wields a large sword in combat. On his arm, he wears a protective gauntlet crafted and repurposed from the iron mask that originally belonged to Asterios.
Personality
Theseus is an unpretentious, polite young man who uses the self-referential pronoun 'boku'. Though once a proud and confident adventurer, discovering the tragic truth behind his famed victory broke his conviction, leaving him deeply self-deprecating, resigned, and overly humble. He disdains arrogance and excessive confidence in himself and others, yet he retains a fondness for telling and hearing heroic tales.
Abilities
Theseus fights pragmatically with a broadsword complemented by Ariadne's thread, which he uses to bind foes, launch dynamic striking attacks, or assist his movements. His skills, including Ariadne's Prayer and Labyrinth Intuition, allow him to act without hesitation and heightened awareness in complex environments. Through Martial Retribution, he can disarm and weaken enemies while boosting his own power. His Noble Phantasm, Ariadne Apolyto Adis, carves out a path to victory against massive foes, while his secondary Noble Phantasm, Dischoria Spira, acts as a counterattack that reflects damage back at opponents.
Background
Born to King Aegeus of Athens, Theseus proved his lineage through a perilous journey punishing notorious bandits. To free Athens from Cretan tribute, he entered the Labyrinth guided by Ariadne's thread and slew the Minotaur. However, upon discovering the monster was merely Asterios—an innocent boy transformed by a divine curse—his sense of justice collapsed. Though he later accomplished heroic feats, including joining the Argonauts and taking the throne, his ill-fated attempt to descend into the Underworld led to his temporary imprisonment, loss of his kingdom, and eventual assassination in exile.
Relationships
Theseus harbors intense guilt toward Asterios, keeping a distant but watchful eye on him. Though he loved Ariadne, circumstances separated them, bringing initial anger from her aunt Circe. He shares a close dynamic with his Argonaut leader Jason, who often scolds his pessimistic attitude, and he looks up to his distant relative Heracles. Due to his past marriage to Antiope, he faces animosity from Amazons like Penthesilea. Toward his Master, Fujimaru Ritsuka, he acts as a dedicated supporter, determined to prevent them from making the same fatal mistakes he did.
Trivia
The gauntlet on his arm is crafted from the iron mask of Asterios, worn continuously as a physical reminder of his greatest mistake. During the Argonauts' voyage, he stepped up as a primary combatant while Heracles was temporarily absent.
