Overview
The Zaku III Custom (model number: AMX-011S) is a high-performance Neo Zeon mobile suit featured in Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ and Mobile Suit Gundam Twilight AXIS. Developed as an upgraded, heavy-assault variant of the baseline Zaku III, it was custom-tuned specifically for Cyber-Newtype pilots to deliver significantly enhanced mobility and heavy firepower on the battlefield. The suit is famously piloted by Neo Zeon officer Mashymre Cello during the First Neo Zeon War, and a red-painted variant is later operated by Danton Hyleg.
Appearance
The Zaku III Custom features a massive, heavily armored silhouette equipped with a single head horn and a signature mono-eye sensor. The unit piloted by Mashymre Cello is painted in a distinctive green and red color scheme and carries large external propellant tanks mounted on its backpack. In contrast, the variant featured in Mobile Suit Gundam Twilight AXIS is coated entirely in a red color scheme.
Abilities
Equipped with massive thrusters and external propellant tanks, the suit achieves mobility superior to the baseline Zaku III. Its armament includes a high-output beam rifle, beam sabers for close combat, and hide bomb dispensers built directly into its skirt armor. Additionally, it integrates a Biosensor system that reacts to the pilot's Cyber-Newtype brainwaves, capable of overloading its engine output to unleash an intense energy aura.
Background
Developed by Axis for Neo Zeon forces, the Zaku III Custom was deployed during the First Neo Zeon War as the personal unit for Cyber-Newtype officer Mashymre Cello. During the conflict, Mashymre engaged Rakan Dahkaran and his Space Wolf Squadron of Doven Wolfs. Pushing his mental energy to its limits, the suit's Biosensor surged wildly, generating a glowing energy field before self-destructing to take out surrounding enemy forces. A red variant of the unit was later operated by Danton Hyleg.
Relationships
Mashymre Cello was the primary pilot of the unit, using his intense loyalty to Haman Karn to unlock the mobile suit's Biosensor potential in battle. Rakan Dahkaran served as a key adversary, leading the Space Wolf Squadron's Doven Wolf units against Mashymre in the suit's final battle. Danton Hyleg later piloted a crimson variant of the Zaku III Custom.
Trivia
Designated as AMX-011S, the Zaku III Custom has expanded beyond its original anime appearances to feature in various tactical video games, including 2nd Super Robot Taisen and Super Robot Taisen Alpha Gaiden.
